Less extension in sub-bass on the Vali 2+.I expected texture to be worse on the Vali 2+, but surprisingly it's not noticeably worse (at least vs Magni 3+).Fine on the HD650, annoying on the Clear. But treble percussion is noticeably forward/closer on the Vali 2+, especially noticeable on shakers, cymbals and hi hats.Vocals and instruments have better layering between them, sound.Still takes the edge and bite off transients, most noticeable on the Clear.I don't notice any warm/tube sound on the Vali 2+.Got this because wanted to test if this adds a different presentation for the HD650 and Clear. I didn't have the Vali 2, and this is my first headphone tube amp (outside of guitar/power amps). Short first impressions of the Vali 2+ vs the Magni 3+ on the HD650, Focal Clear, HD58x, out of the Modi 3. I also think it might get me more tonal color and something that is different than what I already own. I have a lot of dynamic headphones id like to get synergy with (like Dt1990 Pro). Valhalla 2 is also on the list, but the Darkvoice seems like it might be a more colorful, darker, and impactful sounding amplifier, which is what I want (though Id prefer to buy Schiit). I'm actually considering a Darvoice 336se OTL instead. Can you comment on how strident the Vali 2+ it is in comparison to the Magni 3+ ? I am concerned that the Vali 2+ (high gain) might be in the same direction based on your comments comments as the Magni 3+. I have a Magni 3+ as well and I find it a just slightly strident on high gain. Original Vali 2 is my favorite amp that I have.

Purr1n you seem hesitant to make this a definitive upgrade to the original Vali 2? Interestingly enough, I find my original Vali 2 quite neutral and not dark (its more that is has tube bass bloom and treble sparkle making it sound really pleasing, but still qute neutral) Perhaps there's some variance in the stock tubes. Why not? Folks rolled all sorts in tubes in the Vali 2s of old, including rare exotic tubes that cost x4 the amp. However, I do think it would be fun to take measurements using different tubes. I'm not going to wax poetic on the Vali 2+. Zout isn't all that different between low and high, with high Zout still being less than 2-ohms - it is what it is. With low Z planars, like LCD-X, HE5XX, Deva, Verum, low gain seems to sounds best. High gain opens up the stage, breaths a bit better, but can be edgy. Low gain is better controlled and less edgy in the highs. Low and high-gain sound slightly different.

The Garage 1217 Project Horizon is still in play, but it's all together a different sound more like a mini Eddie Current Zana Deux with a MOSFET for output instead of those Russian radar tubes that ran at 400 degrees and burned off the skin on owners' forearms. If you got a Vali 1, and can deal with its idiosyncrasies, and are happy - I don't see the Vali 2+ as necessarily an improvement.įrom a 'technicality' point of view, I feel the Vali 2+ now matches the MCTH (give and take), but with the Vali 2+, we have more even tonal signature. The 2+ is an improvement, but the improvements are incremental, and the tonal balance change from dark / laid-back to more neutral may ruin existing synergies. If you got your system set up and optimized for the Vali 2, then it's probably best to stick with Vali 2.

The question is whether one should upgrade if one has a Vali 2? It depends.

I think the Vali 1 still has a small edge in immediacy, but the Vali 1 also has some issues with the super tube microphonics and highish distortion which is audible, but in a pattern that indicates euphonic distortion.

More lively, more resolving, more engaging similar to the Vali 1 (in retrospect, Vali 2 was a step and a half forward, but a step back).
